Medicare Open Enrollment Period
Did you know that you can make a change to your health plan from January 1 to March 31?
This is the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (OEP) and it’s your chance to switch plans if you’re not satisfied with your current plan. This enrollment period applies only if you’re already in a Medicare Advantage plan.
Here’s What You Can and Can’t Do During the Open Enrollment Period.
You Can:
- Switch Medicare Advantage Plans– If you’re already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can switch to a different plan (with or without drug coverage). Individuals may make one Medicare Advantage OEP election from January 1 through March 31. This is helpful if you find a plan with better benefits, more coverage, or lower costs.
- Go Back to Original Medicare– If you decide that a Medicare Advantage plan isn’t for you, you can return to Original Medicare. You can also sign up for a Part D prescription plan if you do this.
- Change Your Part D Plan–If you’re returning to Original Medicare, you can enroll once in a new Part D plan to cover your medications.
You Can’t:
- Change from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage Plan– If you’re in Original Medicare, you can’t use OEP to switch to a Medicare Advantage plan unless you have a qualifying event.
- Join or Switch Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plans if You’re in Original Medicare– If you are in Original Medicare and not enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan or do not have a qualifying event, this is not the time you can join or switch from one Medicare drug plan to another. Stay up to date on Clover throughout the year here.
- Make More Than One Change– You can only make one change during OEP. Changes will take effect the first day of the month after the plan gets your request. Once you make a switch, it’s final until the next enrollment period. To learn more about the enrollment periods click here.
Why Switching Plans Might Be Important
This period is your time to make sure you have the right coverage for your health and budget for the rest of the year. If you’re not satisfied with your current plan, OEP is your chance to find a better fit. Maybe your doctors aren’t covered, or you’re paying too much out-of-pocket. Switching to a plan that offers better coverage, lower premiums, or more of the benefits you need can save you money and stress.
There are other qualifying events where you may be eligible to switch plans during the year. Find a Clover Medicare Advantage plan in Your State.
